Beryllium-free high performance copper

This premium high-strength copper alloy combines the unmistakable warmth and character of copper with mechanical properties approaching those of Grade 5 titanium. With an ultimate tensile strength of approximately 930 MPa (vs. 950 MPa for Grade 5 titanium), a yield strength of 730 MPa (vs. 880 MPa), and a hardness of around 294 HB (vs. 330–350 HB), it offers exceptional performance for demanding knife components while retaining the unique appearance of copper.

Compared to Grade 5 titanium, it is nearly twice as dense (8.69 vs. 4.43 g/cm³), giving finished knives a more substantial feel in hand. It is also approximately 30% stiffer (150 vs. 114 GPa elastic modulus) and conducts heat more than 20 times better (156 vs. ~7 W/m·K), resulting in excellent machinability and efficient heat dissipation during machining.

Ideal applications include frame locks, bolsters, backspacers, pocket clips, pivot collars, inlays and other premium accents where strength, durability and distinctive aesthetics are equally important.

This alloy has been successfully used for frame locks. Unlike Grade 5 titanium, however, the lockbar should not be heat-set after machining. The alloy derives a significant portion of its mechanical properties from cold work (strain hardening), and heating the lockbar to set the bend may partially anneal the material, reducing its strength and spring performance.
