Custom folding knife with etched meteorite handle and pivot, dark bolster and patterned blade

Exotic Knife Handle Materials: A Maker's Guide

Most custom knives are built on G10, Micarta or woven carbon fiber. This guide covers the materials makers reach for when they want something else: thin-ply composites, superconductor, zirconium, crystallized titanium, meteorite and natural scale stock. For each one it explains what the material is, how it behaves in the shop, and which parts of a knife it suits.

Thin-ply composites: MorphTPC and MorphTPX

What is MorphTPC?

MorphTPC is a thin-ply composite made from unidirectional carbon and quartz fiber. Each layer is only a few tens of micrometers thick. When a scale is contoured or radiused, the cut passes through those layers and exposes them as a tightly packed topographic pattern with strong chatoyance.

The layup decides the look. Depending on the construction, MorphTPC produces three-dimensional Damascus-like patterns, color blending through controlled transparency, or hybrid structures with real metal layers. It is available in more than 150 colorways, in flat, angle cut and Double Damascus constructions.

It cuts cleanly on a mill or by hand. Maker Brian Brown (BBK) put it this way: "Very high quality materials. No voids and machines excellent."

If the colorway you want is not in stock, 2iSUPPLY takes custom MorphTPC orders.

What is MorphTPX?

MorphTPX is the experimental thin-ply line. It uses a more affordable prepreg and fewer layers than MorphTPC, at about half the cost. More than half of each original board is machined away at an angle to expose a deep cross-cut layer pattern.

It is currently offered in black, with either horizontal or vertical layer orientation, in boards around 4 x 70 x 150 mm. As an experimental release, availability is limited.

Woven carbon and electroplated glass fiber

The woven composite collection is the more affordable route: 3K carbon fiber, unidirectional carbon, Lightning Strike carbon, and electroplated glass fiber twill. In the electroplated variants, a metallic coating on the glass fiber sits under a translucent colored resin, so the color and depth shift with the light and viewing angle.

Glass composites

Glass composite scales are pressed for density and uniformity, so each panel is void-free from edge to edge. They hold up to heat during machining, cut to crisp lines without fraying or chipping, and polish well. They come in more than 30 colors.

Exotic metals

What is superconductor?

Superconductor is niobium-titanium (NbTi) filament in a copper matrix. It is the same type of conductor that is wound into MRI and particle-accelerator magnets. Cut across the wire, it shows a silver filament pattern set in copper.

The contrast is in the metal itself, so no etching is needed. Filament grades run from Nano, the finest, through Fine, Medium-Fine, Medium and Large up to XL.

It is sold two ways:

  • Full slices are large cross cuts with a regular filament pattern across the whole face. In the larger grades that makes full knife scales possible. The filaments run through the full thickness, so the pattern stays regular as you contour the handle.
  • Partial slices come from the same stock and are sized for bolsters, inlays, pocket clip accents and jewellery. Each one is photographed front and back on a cutting grid for scale.

Working notes: copper loads abrasives quickly, so use fresh belts and light pressure. The material conducts heat well and gets hot fast, so grind in short passes. Bare copper develops a patina with handling. Let it age, or seal it to keep the bright finish.

Zirconium 705 and Crystal Zirconium 705

Zirconium 705 is zirconium alloyed with niobium. The niobium makes it much stronger than commercially pure Zirconium 702, which is why it works for spring-loaded parts such as frame locks, pocket clips and lock inserts, as well as bolsters, backspacers and pivot collars.

Compared with Grade 5 titanium:

  • Density is 6.56 g/cm³ against 4.43 g/cm³, so it is roughly 50% heavier.
  • Elastic modulus is about 95 GPa against 114 GPa.
  • Mechanical strength approaches that of Grade 5 titanium.

Its best-known property is the deep black oxide it develops through controlled heat treatment. The oxide forms from the base metal instead of being applied as a coating or PVD finish, so scratches are far less noticeable. Zirconium 705 is also less gummy to machine than 702.

Crystal Zirconium 705 has a visible crystalline grain structure with a dark, obsidian-like look, and keeps the strength and corrosion resistance of standard Zirconium 705.

Crystal Titanium

Crystal Titanium is titanium put through a high-temperature treatment that grows its natural grain to a size you can see. Once etched and anodized, the individual crystal facets reflect light at different angles. It is used for pocket clips, bolsters and presentation hardware.

Meteorite

Nickel-iron meteorite shows a crystalline Widmanstätten pattern when it is cut and etched. The pattern forms as the metal cools over an extremely long time, and it cannot be reproduced in a workshop. 2iSUPPLY stocks Aletai meteorite for inlays, bolsters and accents.

Natural scale stock

  • Mammoth tusk bark is the outer layer of fossil mammoth tusk, with natural blue, cream and brown tones. Every piece is different, so each one is listed individually.
  • Mother of pearl is sold as flat scale stock and matched pairs for inlays and scale sets on folders.

Common questions

Where can I buy MorphTPC?

MorphTPC and MorphTPX are sold at 2iSUPPLY.com. 2iSUPPLY ships from Colorado to the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and other countries.

What is the difference between MorphTPC and MorphTPX?

MorphTPC is the flagship thin-ply carbon and quartz composite, with more than 150 colorways. MorphTPX is an experimental line built from a more affordable prepreg with fewer layers, at about half the cost, currently in black.

Does superconductor need to be etched?

No. The silver NbTi filaments and the copper matrix contrast on their own.

Can you make full knife scales from superconductor?

Yes, from full slices in the larger grades. The filaments run through the full thickness, so the pattern holds when the scale is contoured.

Is Zirconium 705 heavier than titanium?

Yes. At 6.56 g/cm³ it is about 50% heavier than Grade 5 titanium at 4.43 g/cm³.

What gives zirconium its black finish?

Heat treatment. It grows a black oxide layer out of the metal itself, not a coating.
